Manchester United contract stipulation complicates potential Edinson Cavani summer exit
According to The Mirror, a clause inserted in the contract of Edinson Cavani could complicate the player’s exit in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 34-year-old’s future at the club remains as uncertain as ever as we enter the summer. His current deal expires in the summer and there is no clarity on whether he will commit his future to United or not.
The Uruguayan veteran signed a one year deal worth £200,000-a-week when he arrived at Old Trafford last October. It also included the option of a 12-month extension, provided both parties agreed to it.
Interestingly it also includes a clause that would net Cavani £2m if United decided against keeping him at the club until the summer of 2022.
With his contract running down, he could leave for a free in the summer. He has been heavily linked with a return to South America with Argentine giants Boca Juniors.
Boca is unable to afford Cavani’s massive £10.5m-a-year pay at United. The report speculates whether the proposed pay off by United will help cover the player’s losses.
Negotiations between United and Cavani have led nowhere with neither side ready to bite the bullet. With Boca handing him a 10-day ultimatum, it could be resolved soon one way or the other.
They are ready to shift their attention to Michael Estrada of Toluca if their bid to land Cavani is unsuccessful. A move to Boca will see Cavani partner former United star Carlos Tevez up front.
