Team News: Anthony Martial potentially ruled out for the next two Manchester United games

According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t The Daily Mail), Manchester United will be without striker Anthony Martial for the weekend’s visit of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 25-year-old is yet to recover from a knee injury sustained while on national duty with France. Martial picked up the injury in Les Bleus’ win over Kazakhstan and missed the win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday night.

French national team boss Didier Deschamps had revealed that Martial is not seriously injured. However, it would appear it is critical enough for him to potentially miss our next two games.

While the report states that Martial will miss the clash against Brighton, he is also far from certain to feature midweek in the Europa League against Granada.

It gives United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a conundrum given his options up front. Marcus Rashford too withdrew from the England squad due to injury while Mason Greenwood too picked up a knock while with the England Under-21s.

However, Martial is expected to be fit for the massive clash against Tottenham Hotspur on April 11.

With Martial and Greenwood out, the onus could fall on Edinson Cavani to lead the line. The 34-year-old’s future at the club is uncertain with his contract set to expire this summer. Whether he can step up to the plate this weekend remains to be seen.

Martial has failed to hit last season’s heights at United. While he has had his moments, it has come far and few in between for him to be considered our ace striker.

Whether he will be a difference-maker for the remainder of the season remains to be seen.
