Transfer News: Edinson Cavani ready to take a pay cut to leave Manchester United

According to Football Insider, Edinson Cavani is ready to take a pay cut to join Boca Juniors from Manchester United in the summer.

The 34-year-old joined the club on a season-long deal on summer deadline day, 2020. He has since played a rather reliable role as the club’s backup striker.

United do have the option to extend the player’s stay by another year, however, negotiations between them have not gotten anywhere. Director of football John Murtough and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward both met with the player recently to discuss his future.

If this report is to be believed, Cavani has already made up his mind and is currently in the final stretch of his time at Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan ace is currently United’s third-highest earner and nets a quarter of a million pounds every week. He is willing to take a much lower payday in order to complete the switch to Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

This appears to be in line with earlier reports that Cavani has an agreement in place with Boca vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme to join them this summer.

Solskjaer’s view

The Red Devils for their part are keen to hold onto their veteran ace. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his backroom staff are impressed with Cavani’s attitude and mentality, and want to keep him.

With the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane set to cost us a bomb, it makes sense to keep an experienced head like Cavani around for another year.

Whether they will get their way remains to be seen.
