Manchester United hold showdown talks with Uruguayan ace Edinson Cavani
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United have held showdown talks with Edinson Cavani as his contract at the club winds down.
The 34-year-old joined the club last summer on deadline day and has so far shown himself to be a dependable backup striker. His contract at the club expires this summer while United are keen to keep him on for another season.
Director of football John Murtough and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward both met with Cavani to discuss whether he wants to extend his contract at United for another season.
While the striker’s response remains unknown as yet, he does have concerns regarding his future at the club. United are keen to sign a striker in the summer and Cavani is worried that it will impact the game time he will receive.
With Anthony Martial struggling and Marcus Rashford playing through injury, United’s problems up front are much bigger than what one new signing can solve. Bringing in a new player while keeping Cavani would appear to be the ideal solution.
The 34-year-old may be nearing the twilight of his career. However, he has proven time and again that he remains a reliable player when needed. While we hope he stays, his concerns are understandable.
More cons than pros!
There is a lot of speculation surrounding Cavani’s future at the club. He continues to be linked to Argentine giants Boca Juniors. Former United ace Marcos Rojo even admitted that he would welcome a reunion in Buenos Aires.
The player’s father has also gone on record admitting that Cavani is uncomfortable in England. Uruguayan national team assistant coach Mario Rebollo has added to the clamour of Cavani’s potential departure from Old Trafford. (h/t The Daily Mail)

The player’s time at United is also not without controversy. Cavani was banned for three games in January and fined £100,000 for using the word ‘ne*rito’ in a social media post. The verdict had left the player deeply unhappy.
It is in United’s best interests to settle the Cavani situation as soon as possible. We face a key summer ahead of us and it will be of little help for us to go into the window not knowing fully well where we stand.
