Manchester United captain Harry Maguire praises Marcus Rashford for England decision despite injury

Speaking in a press conference on Saturday (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United captain Harry Maguire lauded Marcus Rashford for accepting a controversial England call-up despite his injury.

The English winger was forced off with an injury against AC Milan in the 2nd leg of their last-16 tie. This led to him missing the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leicester City.

But despite his fitness issues, Gareth Southgate named him in his England squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers this month. As expected, he sat out of their 5-0 win against San Marino.

Now, Rashford has been called back to Manchester United after latest assessment of his foot injury deemed him unviable to play for England’s remaining two games this month.

Rashford upholds England spirit

And as strange as the decision to call him up for the international games was, Maguire thinks that Rashford accepted the invitation due to the principles instilled into the Three Lions team.

“That shows a lot from Marcus, it was a little reminder of the way we work, the principles we’ve got. It’s really important to show the group is together and Marcus has come; even though he probably knew in his mind he wasn’t going to be fit. It shows the spirit between the players.”

Rashford reported to St. George’s Park with an injury and it was odd that he was called up in the first place. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be pleased that common sense prevailed and that he is back at the Aon Training Complex.
