Harry Maguire out with injury for Manchester United as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial return to training
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is set to be out due to an injury as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial return to training. The two forwards are in contention to be in the squad as the Red Devils face Manchester City next at the Etihad Stadium on 2 October.
The English centre-back picked up an injury on international duty with the Three Lions. On the other hand, the French centre-forward has been on the sidelines for most of the season. United’s academy graduate has missed the last couple of games as well.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Manchester derby via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag confirmed Maguire’s absence. The gaffer has also confirmed that Rashford and Martial have returned. However, there are still doubts about their involvement at the Etihad.
“The situation is that Harry Maguire is injured and I think for the rest we have some doubts. With Anthony Martial, he was training all week with the group so I’m really happy with that situation.
“He’s performing really well in training, makes a good impression. Rashford returns to training, so we are also happy with that.”
Our captain started for England in both their recent UEFA Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany. But, unfortunately, the 29-year-old picked up an injury in the 3-3 draw against Hansi Flick’s team at Wembley Stadium.
Former AS Monaco forward Martial has played just once for the Red Devils in the 2022/23 campaign. The French national came on as a second-half substitute in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
United have also been without their 24-year-old English forward during the two Europa League fixtures. Rashford starred in the 3-1 victory over Arsenal. However, since then, he has missed the games against Real Sociedad and Sheriff Tiraspol.
Maguire has had a tough time over the recent weeks. As a result, the England international has been dropped to the bench. Since the 4-0 loss to Brentford, the 29-year-old has not started for the Old Trafford side in the Premier League.
On the other hand, Rashford and Martial seem to have regained their confidence under Ten Hag. The English and French duo had a good pre-season. And the 24-year-old has been able to continue his form.
