Manchester United to battle West Ham United for Fredi Bobic
According to German publication Sporting Bild (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United are set to battle it out with West Ham United for Fredi Bobic.
The 49-year-old is currently the Director of Football at Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. He has held the position at Frankfurt since 2016 and appears to be ready to move on this summer.
The Germans are keen to keep hold of the Yugoslovakian and are prepared to offer him better terms. However, they are also resigned to the fact that he might as well seek greener pastures elsewhere.
Interest in Bobic appears to be high, with Hertha Berlin and RB Leipzig also keeping tabs on him. While the Red Devils have an interest in him, it remains to be seen if they are willing to pursue his signature actively.
United have been touted to land a director of football in the recent past. However, that search has led to nowhere and news regarding the appointment has gone stale of late.
Borth Hertha and Bobic are pushing for a reunion with the latter, putting pressure on Frankfurt to sort things out. With United yet to make a concrete move, it is fair to assume that the club’s interest in Bobic is not a priority.
A key appointment
Bringing in a director of football will ease the burden of recruitment on Ed Woodward. The United honcho’s record in signing players is mixed at best and he lacks the same acumen he shows in handling the commercial aspects of the club.
The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have shown that a good relationship between the manager and the DOF can be in the club’s best interests.
United do not appear to be any closer to implementing such a model at Old Trafford.

As we head into yet another summer window, the focus will once again shift to Ed Woodward. United are in a position to step up to the next level, provided they can bring in the right players.
Whether it can be achieved or not remains to be seen.
