Ed Woodward holds informal talks with Perez regarding Manchester United target Raphael Varane

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have been given a massive boost in their pursuit of Raphael Varane.

Real Madrid are becoming increasingly aware that the 27-year-old may not pen fresh terms with the club. With his contract expiring in 2022, the Spaniards are ready to part ways with the defender this summer.

Varane believes there is a great disparity between his salary offer and what the highest-paid players at the club are earning. As a player who has been a part of much success in the last 10 years, his stance is understandable.

Real, for their part, appear keen on keeping him. They have also offered the player the captain’s armband but to no avail.

They are now ready to sell and will look to recoup the best price possible next summer. With him set to enter his final year, it also represents the last opportunity for the Spaniards to demand top dollar.

Madrid’s debt has risen to €901m, with a net debt of €355m. The club needs to cut costs in order to finance the signings of Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappe. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Informal discussions already made

The United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was prepared to sanction a £100million move for Varane following the 2018 World Cup. But it got nowhere and the player stayed put in Madrid.

Woodward even held informal discussions with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over breakfast in Miami. The duo remains on good terms despite the David de Gea fiasco in 2015.

Rated at £70million, Varane will not come cheap. But given his experience, he will be a worthy addition to the United backline.

An experienced player and also a winner, Varane’s know-how and skills will greatly aid a young United side who are still yet to experience great success.
