Manchester United get slammed for ‘basic’ mistake that Liverpool repeatedly exploited
Manchester United were at the mercy of Liverpool throughout the first 45 minutes of their recent game at Old Trafford. The Reds kept penetrating Erik ten Hag’s defensive line and got into a ton of dangerous positions.
All Jurgen Klopp‘s men had to do was overload the defensive line with extra bodies and they were able to get in front of goal. Danny Murphy ripped into the Red Devils for allowing Liverpool to exploit such a weakness. Let’s have a look at what the pundit had to say. (h/t BBC)
“That is just basics and should not be happening at this level, certainly not as regularly as it did – in the first half it felt like it was happening every five minutes.”
Murphy added that Manchester United’s lack of discipline in defence was amazing to watch. This isn’t even the first time that the Red Devils have allowed Liverpool to exploit this weakness.
Their game in December which luckily concluded as a draw was pretty much the same. Klopp’s men kept committing bodies forward and completely overwhelmed the defensive line who couldn’t keep track of their opponents’ runs.
Erik ten Hag still has a lot of work to do on his team. As Murphy stated, It was almost too easy for Liverpool to get in behind them. If Klopp’s forwards had gotten lucky with just another one of their 28 shots it would’ve been a completely different story.
The Dutchman needs to plug the holes in his defence, it is high time that Ten Hag stops relying on luck and starts to put some defensive discipline into his team.
