Mark Hughes believes Manchester United should have signed Edinson Cavani in his prime
Speaking to Sky Sports, former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes believes the club secured Edinson Cavani too late in his career to reap the full benefits of his abilities.
The 34-year-old was signed on summer deadline day and has so far been the pick of our recruits. He has added much-needed depth and has stepped up when called upon this season.
Given Anthony Martial’s poor form, Cavani has more often than not been asked to step up. He has so far made 24 appearances, scoring seven and assisting two more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“Maybe they need Cavani five years ago when he was in his pomp.”
Hughes was full of praise for the Uruguayan ace. He believes Cavani has brought the necessary focus to make things happen around him.
“They probably got him at the wrong time, but he is still an outstanding centre forward. When I see him playing in this team I think he gives them more focus, and they have confidence of giving the ball to his feet and things happen around him.””
At 34, Cavani is nearing the end of his career. While he still packs a punch, his best days are admittedly behind him. Hughes believes United can do well by bringing in either Harry Kane or Erling Haaland. Whether we do have the financial clout to do that remains to be seen.
A missed opportunity?
According to The Express, former boss Sir Alex Ferguson shared a similar opinion regarding Cavani as that of Hughes. The Scot was keen to bring the Uruguayan to Old Trafford and attempted to make it happen in 2014.
Unfortunately, it was not to be and he went on to make history at PSG. Cavani was one of the best strikers in European football during his prime. It is a shame that we only got to watch him play after his peak.

Given our struggles, it is a no-brainer that we need to bring in a prolific young striker in the summer. Anthony Martial has failed to make the most of his chances and it remains to be seen how patient the club is willing to remain.
