Jamie Carragher urges Solskjaer to drop David de Gea to accommodate Dean Henderson
According to the Metro, Jamie Carragher has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop David de Gea from his Manchester United starting XI.
The 30-year-old has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for almost a decade now. Once the world’s best in his position, he has made a number of high-profile mistakes in recent years.
With the promising Dean Henderson at the club, Carragher believes it is time for the youngster to be given a chance to prove his ability.
“David de Gea, right now, is not a goalkeeper to win the league. They have a really good understudy in Dean Henderson, but we don’t know if he’s Manchester United material.”
Carragher believes De Gea is not a keeper who can help United win the league. While he has refused to grant Henderson his seal of approval, he believes the youngster should be given a look in.
At just 23, Henderson has the time and ability to go on and become United’s next great goalkeeper. Carragher believes the remaining 10-12 games this season can serve as a perfect audition.
“If I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I would put Dean Henderson in for 10 or 12 games now because they need to find out if he’s Manchester United’s number one for next season.”
The goalkeeping situation is something the Englishman wants United to correct. If Henderson fails to impress, the club has been urged to bring in a new custodian in the summer.
In defence of De Gea
While it is true that De Gea has made a number of errors in recent years, he has also stepped up his game this season. His failings this time around especially the late goal against Everton has more to do with him playing behind an unreliable backline than anything else.
While Henderson surely has potential, throwing him into the lineup when so much is at stake is a risky business. The 23-year-old will get his chance but playing him now could sabotage both his and United’s seasons.
Interestingly both Henderson and De Gea have made the same number of errors in the Premier League this season-One. United are better off persisting with De Gea for now.

The last remaining key player from United’s 2013 Premier League winning campaign, it is laughable that Carragher considers De Gea incapable of Premier League glory.
More so when one considers the Liverpool legend does not know what it takes to win the league. The Spaniard has looked to be on the wane, but he should be counted on to see out this season.
