Adnan Januzaj believes he would still have been at Manchester United if not for Louis van Gaal
According to Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj believes the appointment of Louis van Gaal threw a wrench in his future at the club.
The youngster broke into the first team at United under Van Gaal’s predecessor David Moyes. The 18-year-old showed much promise and looked set for a bright future in red.
He was also handed Ryan Gigga’s legendary number 11 jeresey. If it was seen as an omen of things to come, then the club got it horribly wrong.
“If I had the right people that really were pushing me, that were giving me love and wanted me to play, yes, of course I would still be there [at United], possibly..”
The Belgian played a few games for United and eventually went out on loan to Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland. He eventually left on a permanent deal in 2017 to Real Sociedad after making just 63 appearances for United.
Time has done little to soften the way Januzaj feels about Van Gaal. It would appear that the 26-year-old is not ready to forgive the Dutchman for the way he was treated.
“No, once you meet someone that you’re not going to have the best moments of your life with you never really forget that person.”
What if!
Januzaj believes he would still have been at the club had he been under people who would have treated him and guided him better. He admits he did not want to leave United but had no choice given the lack of opportunities.
“If you don’t have the right people, the right coaches who can push you further then it would be really difficult for you to show yourself on the pitch, to express yourself.”
Januzaj’s contract at Sociedad expires next year. United have a buyback clause to bring the player back to Old Trafford if they so wish. Given how his career has failed to take off, it would be a surprise if we went ahead with the option.

The Belgian will have a chance to prove his point when he faces us in the Europa League round of 32. A decent player, Januzaj has it in his locker to trouble us if we take him for granted.
It is unfortunate how his time at United panned out. Whether he could have done better under a different manager is debatable. But at 26, he still has time on his hands to write a new chapter in his career.
