Clinical – Solskjaer tips Manchester United on what they must do to win trophies
Speaking to BBC (h/t Eurosport) after the 1-0 win against West Ham on Tuesday, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that his team should sharpen up in front of goal to win trophies.
United succumbed to a late equaliser against Everton last weekend to drop two points in the league. Nevertheless, they bounced back from that defeat this week by beating the Hammers 1-0 in the 5th round of the FA Cup.
United dominated the game and had 17 shots and 62% possession against West Ham. Despite, that, the team was forced into extra-time, where Scott McTominay’s 97th-minute goal proved to be the difference.
Despite the win, the Norwegian criticised his team’s finishing in front of goal. United have lost four consecutive semi-finals under Solskjaer and should be ruthless in front of goal if they are to go all the way.
“I think we got about 15 to 17 shots in the end but we need to be more clinical. We should’ve finished the game off earlier.”
Solskjaer targetting silverware
Solskjaer believes that when his team is just 1-0 up, the game can be guided by luck. However, he says that he is just happy to still be in the running for three trophies this season.
“When it’s only one-nil and we are wasteful, anything can happen to us – we knew that from the last game. It’s just about finishing the game off but we’re through. We’re in the hat and that’s what we wanted.”
He then adds that United want to win every game and want to compete for trophies. Solskjaer laments his side’s luck in the cup draws, but is glad that the club has taken another step towards the final. (h/t BBC)
