Jamie Carragher expresses sympathy for Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire
Speaking on Sky Sports (h/t The Express), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that he sympathizes with Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire.
The 27-year-old endured yet another frustrating night against Everton last weekend. United looked to be just moments away from securing an important three points, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Maguire was at the centre of the incident having unwittingly played the striker onside for the goal.
“He’s playing people onside, I’ve got sympathy for him.”
Carragher also believes Maguire did err in his decision to hold a deep line. He is right in the assessment that the 28-year-old should be taking charge and holding the defence.
“Harry Maguire has had a lot of criticism and the first bit of criticism, which I think is right, is that he’s a leader at the back, he’s got to decide where that line is.”
The Merseyside legend admits he often found himself in Maguire’s shoes during his playing days. As someone who has experienced the same, it is fair to say that Carragher has a good understanding of the United skipper’s woes.
“The reason I have sympathy for him is because I can put myself in that position.”
As someone who talked about the danger that Calvert-Lewin posed before the game, Maguire should have heeded his own advice going into stoppage time.
The 27-year-old isn’t just the United captain but also our best defender. Much more will be expected of him if we are serious about ending our long wait for the league title.

The best United can do now is not to let the Everton fightback derail our season. With 16 games still to go, there is much to be played for.
Maguire should now rally his troops and lead from the front as United look for a miracle against a dominant Manchester City side.
