Manchester United to wait until the summer before making a decision on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

According to The Sun, Manchester United are willing to wait and watch before deciding to offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new contract or not.

The Norwegian has been at the helm since taking over from Jose Mourinho in 2018. He has since slowly but steadily tried to bring about the ‘United DNA’ that has become synonymous with success.

While there has been good progress, there has also been a lack of tangible success. Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy and despite all the work he has done, that continues to be a blot on his managerial career.

United are the closest challengers to league leaders Manchester City and are also through to the last-32 of the Europa League. They made it to the semifinals of the Carabao Cup and could inch closer to FA Cup glory if they beat West Ham United.

The Norwegian has 16 months left on his current United deal. He looks set to be awarded a two-year extension provided he delivers success this campaign.

Solskjaer’s sides have been largely inconsistent and are capable of both the sublime and the ridiculous. This has seen questions raised against the United boss’ ability.

Finishing second in the league while also winning a cup will be proof of tangible progress under the Norwegian. It could convince the board that the club is going in the right direction and that Solskjaer is the man for the job.

While the team has done well to reach four semifinals under Solskjaer, they have lost all four of them. With the squad bottling golden opportunities, Solskjaer still has much to prove as a top level manager.

Whether he can rise to the challenge remains to be seen.

While Solskjaer has done well, it is not enough to qualify as success at a club such as United. It would appear that he now has six months to prove to the board that he is the right man for the job.

How he performs under pressure will be a true test of his managerial ability.
