Manchester United stance on Brandon Williams loan transfer shaped by exits this January

A report by Manchester Evening News states that Manchester United are not open to loaning out Brandon Williams during the January transfer window.

The club sees him as cover at right-back, especially after two exits in that position. The 19-year-old Ethan Laird departed the club earlier this month for a loan spell at MK Dons.

He is expected to return at the end of this season. Meanwhile, Timothy-Fosu Mensah left Old Trafford to join Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

And United now want to keep the 20-year-old right-back as cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Wan-Bissaka is the club’s first-choice right-back, and the club have had problems when he has been unavailable.

A good move by the club

Williams had a great start to life in the Manchester United senior team. The youngster made 36 appearances for the club in the 2019/20 season, mostly at left-back.

However, he has gone down the pecking order in recent months. This is largely due to Luke Shaw having a consistent run in the first-team and the arrival of Alex Telles in the summer.

“Brandon has shown that lately so hopefully he will just keep carrying on as he does. He knows my view on it, he knows my view on him and we believe in the boy.”
