Manchester United offered the chance to sign Edin Dzeko
According to Italian publication, Gazzetta Dello Sport via Express, Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign AS Roma skipper Edin Dzeko.
The 34-year-old has fallen out of favour with Roma boss Paulo Fonseca and his future in the Italian capital remains unclear. This has seen him be offered to both Manchester clubs.
Dzeko is acquainted with the Premier League, having represented Manchester City 189 times, scoring 72 goals and assisting 39 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
While the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker remains a potent force, it makes little sense for United to pursue him. At 34, he is older than Edinson Cavani and arguably offers lesser than the Uruguayan veteran.
According to the report, United are yet to show any signal that they are ready to take the striker. This augurs well given the short-termism that would accompany such a deal.
With Odion Ighalo’s loan expiring, United are short of a striker. The Nigerian was, however, a player on the periphery and hardly featured this season. Not replacing him is something the club can afford to do.
Right position, wrong man!
While Cavani has impressed, Anthony Martial has so far had a year to forget. The Frenchman has struggled for form and has fallen short of the expectations he rekindled last season.
With Cavani getting older and Martial failing to impress, bringing in a new striker should be a priority. However, it makes scant sense to bring in Dzeko, who is himself nearing the end of his career.
The Red Devils have made the right choice in passing on the 34-year-old Bosnian star.

At 34, Dzeko is one of the veterans of the game today. The prospect of him returning to England with United is a significantly unlikely scenario. All being said, it is in the club’s best interest that we do not take in another pensioner.
