Fabrizio Romano reveals Manchester United are not keen on signing Dayot Upamecano

According to the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United will not be making a move to sign Dayot Upamecano this January.

The 22-year-old is one of the best young defensive talents in European football. A potentially dominant centre-back, he has attracted attention from a number of Europe’s top sides.

It was reported earlier that United were looking to steal a march on other suitors by moving for Upamecano this month. It would have seen the Red Devils fork out an impressive £55m for his services.

With just days left in the January window, Upamecano now looks set to stay on at RB Leipzig until the end of the season. However, he could be sold in the summer.

The Frenchman has a relatively modest €42.5m release clause – a steal for a player of his potential. With United not in talks to sign the player, the race is open in the summer.

With his release clause public and a number of teams in need, it remains to be seen if we missed a trick by passing him on last summer.

Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Chelsea are among the teams keen on Upamecano. The Bavarian giants need a replacement for Real Madrid bound David Alaba, while the Blues need a replacement for Thiago Silva. (h/t The Daily Mail)

Liverpool meanwhile are going through a defensive crisis.

In Upamecano, we will not just be getting a player who can deliver today, but also for the future. Signing the Frenchman would be nothing short of a statement by United. He has the traits needed to become a defensive colossus for years to come.
