Paul Pogba baffled by referee’s decision to chalk off Harry Maguire goal against Burnley
Speaking in the post-match interview (h/t Manchester Evening News), United midfielder Paul Pogba questioned the refereeing in the game against Burnley, which included a disallowed Harry Maguire goal.
The English defender rose highest at the back post to head in United’s opener in the first half. However, the goal was disallowed by referee Kevin Friend for an infringement by Maguire.
The former Leicester City defender was adjudged to have fouled Erik Pieters as he rose to head the ball. The score remained at 0-0 until Paul Pogba’s volley found the net in the 71st minute.
Speaking after the match, Pogba stated that some decisions by the referee were ‘strange’ and that Maguire’s goal should have stood.
“It was a goal for sure… It was a beautiful goal. Then the referee decides that… it was kind of strange. Strange decisions today.”
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in agreement with Pogba, who was also the Man of the Match in the win against the Clarets.
Result is all that matters
The Norwegian said to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News) that it was nowhere near a foul by Maguire.
“Definitely not a foul from Harry on his goal. If you can’t jump and head like this… I don’t believe it’s anywhere near a foul.”
Thankfully, the incident has little significance now that United got their goal and held on until the final whistle for the win. The result sees United leapfrog rivals Liverpool into the first spot in the Premier League table.
The win also comes at a great time as Manchester United prepare to take on Liverpool in a mammoth derby this weekend.
