Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes a subtle swipe at arch-rivals Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at his gracious best in the post-match presser after our 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semifinals.

It was the Norwegian’s fourth straight semifinal loss in charge of the club. Despite the promise shown in getting to the last four, United have managed to throw it all away with abject performances when it matters.

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail), Solskjaer added that United lost to the better team on the night. While he believes United have improved, they will still need to do more to beat Pep Guardiola’s side.

“We met, at the moment, probably the best team in England and we didn’t have enough today.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester City are the best team in England

Solskjaer appeared to hint that United’s loss came against ‘probably’ the best team in England. While there is no doubt City is one of the best teams in the country, it can be debated if they truly are the nation’s top side.

The Norwegian’s comment can be taken as a swipe at arch-rivals and Premier League champions Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side are level on points with United, having played a game more.

With the title race heating up, the words between the managers too have been flying thick and fast. (h/t The Metro)

United face Liverpool at Anfield on January 17

With us now out of the Carabao Cup, attention will turn to the FA Cup and the Premier League. United and Liverpool face off at Anfield in what is a potential six-pointer in the title race on January 17.

Whether Solskjaer’s comment can be seen as a fresh salvo in the mind games leading up to the fixture remains to be seen. Hopefully, the team can also back up his words on the pitch, unlike yesterday.

More Manchester United News

It is pretty damning as a United supporter to see us throw shade at one arch-rival by praising another. Rather than make comments to get token points, Solskjaer should ensure United go on to become the aforementioned ‘best team in England’ under his guidance.

Despite all the promise shown, United have so far lacked the killing instinct when needed. With a lot still to play for, Solskjaer can hopefully rectify that.
