Edinson Cavani speaks out after being handed a three-match ban by the FA
Taking to Twitter, Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has issued a statement of apology after being handed a three-match ban by the FA.
The 33-year-old found himself in hot waters after he referred to a friend as ‘ne*rito’, responding to a message after his brace in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Southampton.
Cavani deleted the post soon after he was informed that it could cause offence, even though the term is used affectionately in South America. Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has repeatedly defended the striker, insisting that he wasn’t aware of the connotations of the term.
The FA confirmed that Cavani had been slapped with a three-game ban after charging him with ‘misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3’.
As a result, Cavani will now miss Manchester United’s next three games against Aston Villa (Premier League), Manchester City (Carabao Cup) and Watford (FA Cup). In addition, the veteran striker was also fined £100,000.
A few hours after the charges were confirmed, Cavani reached out to fans on Twitter, issuing an apology.
“I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further in my intention. Those who know me know that my effort always seeks the simplest joy and friendship!”
