Jose Mourinho cries foul at being denied time to turn Manchester United around
According to The Independent, Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho believes he was not given enough time to succeed at Manchester United.
The Portuguese tactician succeeded Louis van Gaal in 2016 and immediately led us to the League Cup and Europa League. He followed that up with a second-place finish in 2017/18 – a feat that looks more impressive today.
It was however in the third season that things began to unravel. A poor start to the season culminated in a 3-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. It would prove to be Mourinho’s last game in charge of United.
“The first club where I felt I need time and time was not given was at Manchester United.”
Now the manager of Spurs, Mourinho lamented the time given to Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. He hinted that his plan for United was cut short by the club’s lack of patience.
Despite being shown the door, Mourinho has hinted at no ill feelings towards United. In fact, he went on to say that he tries to keep good relationships with people even while leaving clubs.
“When I leave clubs, I keep very good relationship with everybody, and United is one more example of that.”
Road to redemption?
Mourinho has often been in charge of teams that did not need a long-term vision. If there were doubts he could oversee a transformation at United, one only needs to look at the job he has done at Spurs.
In just over a year in charge, the Portuguese has addressed the North Londoners slide and turned them into genuine title contenders.
United meanwhile have fared no better and have not won a trophy since his departure. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also continues to get away with performances that Mourinho in all likelihood would have been ostracised for.

It is debatable if Mourinho would have gone on to turn our fortunes around had he stayed in charge. If anything, he has to his credit gone on to resurrect his reputation at the Bridge.
It is easy to make such statements now that his Spurs side are at the top of the league. Whether it would truly have been the case is something we will never know.
