David de Gea believes Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title

Speaking to the club’s official site, David de Gea has claimed that he believes Manchester United have what it takes to challenge for the title.

The Spaniard was in goal as the Red Devils put up a dogged defensive display against Manchester City in the derby yesterday.

“They didn’t create too many chances, maybe two or three big chances, but I think, against them, it was defensively a great game.”

While we had to share the spoils on the night, the draw was a welcome result after our sobering loss to RB Leipzig in midweek.

Unlike in Germany, the United backline held their own and stopped the City attack in their tracks. In fact, the Sky Blues could hardly string together any clear cut chances.

De Gea praised this defensive showing against Pep Guardiola’s side but claimed that we lost an excellent opportunity to once again defeat our local rivals.

“We played at home, we always want to win, especially against Man City, so I think we missed a big chance to beat them today.”

Liverpool are the defending champions

The Spanish shot-stopper is satisfied with the way the match ended. He believes it was a good performance that we can work with.

With Chelsea also losing on the night, the title race could take another twist in the coming weeks. De Gea believes it is more open than ever this campaign and that the players will have to believe they can win it.

“The Premier League is very open, many teams are fighting for the title. We have to dream, we have to believe that we can win the Premier League this year and go for it.”

With a number of teams in the fray this time around, focus will be the key. There is still a long way to go before the end. Provided we can keep our focus and form, there is no saying what we could achieve.

De Gea is not wide off the mark in saying that we have a shot at the title. No team has looked invincible this season and we are within manageable distance of the top.

A good run of results could help sway the tide in our favour. While the defensive display yesterday was promising, we will need to put up a better all-round performance in future ties.
