Louis van Gaal believes Donny van de Beek made a mistake by joining Manchester United
According to Dutch channel Ziggo via Football Oranje (h/t Daily Mail), former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has criticized Donny van de Beek for joining the club last summer.
The Dutch international was the club’s first high-profile signing of the summer. He came to Old Trafford with the reputation as one of Holland’s finest talents.
Despite scoring on his debut, Van de Beek is yet to become a regular in the United starting XI. Of his 16 appearances so far in all competitions, nine have come off the bench. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Van Gaal, who managed United for two seasons, believes Van be Beek would have been better off moving elsewhere. (h/t Daily Mail)
“I hope his time will come, but I don’t think he made a good choice.”
Van Gaal has questioned why the 23-year-old was needed with the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes already at the club. Praising his compatriot for his ability, the former United boss believes there are a number of teams who could have done justice to Van de Beek. (h/t Daily Mail)
“There are so many teams, which could have done better justice to him, also in the top. He is a boy with many qualities.”
With Bruno Fernandes an ever-present, Van de Beek has also found himself behind Pogba, Fred, and Scott McTominay in the United pecking order.
