Manchester United stars Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial ruled out for RB Leipzig clash

As confirmed by the club’s official site, Manchester United will have to do without both Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial for their Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

A point will be enough for United to progress to the knockout stages. Our opponents, however, will need all three just to be sure.

Both players were taken off in our 3-1 win over West Ham United yesterday night. With key clashes against RB Leipzig and Manchester City up next, their injuries could not have come at a worse time. (h/t Mirror)

With both players out, we have not just lost our best player from last season but also our most impactful summer signing.

“Anthony and Edinson, they had minor things, but they won’t make the trip, no.”

The United attack will now bear a depleted look going into what is potentially a season-defining match. More onus will now be on the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to get us the goals.

Rashford scored an impressive hat-trick in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. More of the same tomorrow will be more than welcome.

The good news

It is however not all bad news. Both David de Gea and Luke Shaw are back in contention. However, with Dean Henderson and Alex Telles impressing, we can afford to ease in the players returning to action.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also referred to Martial and Cavani’s issue as ‘minor’. Hopefully, this indicates that they are in contention to return for the Manchester derby this weekend.

United will also be without Fred, who received his marching orders against PSG last week. Leipzig too have their issues, with ace defender Dayot Upamecano suspended for the match.
