National team boss advises struggling Man United on how to succeed at Old Trafford

Ryan Giggs offers Daniel James advice on how to succeed at Manchester United

Speaking to Webby and O’Neil (h/t Metro), Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has given Daniel James advice on how to turn his fortunes around at Old Trafford.

Having joined from Swansea City last summer, James got off to a brilliant start to life at United. He has, however, found the going tough since and was largely ineffective in the second half of 2019/20.

This even saw him get linked with a move away from the club earlier this summer. Marcelo Bielsa was keen to take the player to Elland Road, only for United to reject the offer.

As the manager of Wales, Giggs knows James well. In fact, it was the United legend who recommended the player to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In his words, James can provide Solskjaer with a number of options due to his versatility. He touched upon the different roles the winger played for Wales to illustrate his point.

“In the game against Ireland, he played on the wing, and against Bulgaria away he played more as an inside forward.”

Giggs’ rationale on playing James centrally is the advantage he has against centre-backs. A speedy player with pace to burn, the prospect of going up against the Welshman is no easy prospect.

“Centre-halves don’t want to be against him, centre-halves don’t want to be going out to those wide areas and facing Dan James.”

Giggs has also advised the youngster to improve his deciksion making once he gets into good positions.

Given James’ skill set, he would find it easier to go up against centre-backs compared to full-backs. Whether this is something United are willing to exploit remains to be seen.

James has made four appearances for United this season. He is yet to score or make an assist so far.
