Inter Milan eyeing move for Chris Smalling
According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t The Sun), Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan are plotting a swoop for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
The 30-year-old Smalling just returned to the club after a successful loan spell in Italy, where he impressed heavily for Inter’s rivals AS Roma. He featured 37 times in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting two more.
The Giallorossi were interested in signing the England international on a permanent deal. But, their inability to match United’s price tag meant that the defender is back at the club. (h/t The Sun)
And now, Inter Milan have now entered the fray to land the 30-year-old England international this summer. The Nerazzurri have done a number of deals with us over the past year.
Last summer saw Inter sign Romelu Lukaku on a permanent deal, while Alexis Sanchez also moved to the club on loan. In January, Ashley Young left Old Trafford for San Siro as well.
Having recently made Sanchez’s transfer permanent only last week, Inter are now after Smalling. Along with Inter, Italian champions Juventus, too, are keen on a move for the 30-year-old. (h/t The Sun)

Smalling, having fallen down the pecking order at the club, did well to revitalise his career at Roma. However, despite his resurgence, he is unlikely to have a role at Old Trafford moving forward, what with the club looking to sign a new centre-back.
It seems very much likely that Smalling will be back on his way to Italy this summer. However, it remains to be seen if it will be to Inter or Juventus, or whether Roma come back with an offer.
