As per Brentwood Gazette, West Ham is eyeing up a move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling. The English center half has developed into a fine defender for Manchester United and England since his move from Fulham in 2010.
Now the Hammers believe that they can tempt him to move south to his hometown. They are apparently ready to table a bid of £20 million for the 26 year old defender. West Ham United will be moving to their new Olympic Stadium after this season and probably want to make Smalling as signature signing as they move to the new ground. Slaven Bilic also has plans for Smalling as he feels the English defender fits into his strategy next season.
However, given that Manchester United aiming for trophies and Smalling has developed into a fine defender at Old Trafford, it is difficult to see him leaving at this point. Also, given that he is just in his prime it is very unlikely that Manchester United will allow him to leave.
