The father of Manchester United target Mats Hummels has insisted his son will not be leaving the Westfalenstadion this summer, despite interest from United.
The 25 year-old defender is believed to be van Gaal’s number one target to replace the outgoing defensive pairing of Rio Ferdinand and captain Nemanja Vidic.
It seems the fears that Jurgen Klopps’ back-to-back Bundesliga winning side would be picked apart have not materialised, except for the departures of Gotze and Lewandowski.
So with his number one defensive target ruled out, who should van Gaal look to bring in? Here are three suggestions –
Benedikt Howedes – Another Bundesliga defender, the Schalke Captain has had a season hampered by injuries but is still one of the best in Germany. Squawka shows he won an impressive 57% of his tackles.
Ezequiel Garay – The Argentinian centre-back has been linked with United for the past three seasons, but now is the time to bring him in. He has been a vital part of Jorge Jesus’ league winning Benfica and at 27 he is entering his prime.
Jan Vertonghen – Despite a turbulent season at Tottenham and making only 19 league appearances, the Belgian is still one of the Premier League’s best and Squakwa shows he won a staggering 74% of his aerial battles.
Vertonghen looks to be the best option for me, Premier League proven, versatile enough to play left-back and in midfield and understands van Gaal’s style of play having been at Ajax for six years.
Would Tottenham be willing to let him go? If recent history shows us anything it is that if the player is willing and the right offer comes in, there is not much a club can do.
