David de Gea wishes Alejandro Garnacho a happy birthday, and the Argentine responds
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea wished current United starlet Alejandro Garnacho a happy birthday via an Instagram story.
In response, Garnacho put out a story of his own, thanking the former Spain international. The Argentina international turned 20 two days ago.
The two players had two very different campaigns in 2023/24. While Garnacho emerged as one of United’s hottest prospects, gradually becoming an integral part of Erik ten Hag‘s setup as the season progressed, the veteran goalkeeper found himself unable to find a new club after leaving United at the end of the 2022/23 season after 12 years.
Garnacho has also been sensationally linked with a move away from United, with Al Hilal reportedly interested in breaking the bank for him, though neither Garnacho nor United have taken an interest in entertaining any such offer.
Garnacho is currently in the US with the Argentina national team playing in the 2024 Copa América, which the Albiceleste are heavy favourites to win.
Garnacho’s current £50,000-a-week contract at United is set to run until June 2028.
While Garnacho guns for a new contract, De Gea’s last one keeps him out
It’s very, very unlikely that United let Garnacho leave Old Trafford this summer, rather we shall likely see a heftily upgraded contract handed to the Argentine in the near future.
United need to make sure not to make the contract too grand, though, because that is exactly the kind of mistake they are looking to avoid going forward, and in fact it’s contracts of that nature that are keeping De Gea out of a job.
De Gea, who despite still being a good shot-stopper has been stylistically past his prime for a fair few years now, earned £375k per week in his last season at United. This, coupled with his being antiquated at the top level by virtue of his playing style, has seen him struggle for a new club.
