Manchester United receive a fitness boost as Argentina selects defender Lisandro Martinez for the upcoming friendlies during the March international break
The inclusion of Lisandro Martinez in the Argentina squad for the March international break provides a fitness boost to Manchester United. Martinez has missed most of the start of the season due to a foot injury that reoccurred since last season.
The 26-year-old suffered a knee injury a few games after returning from his foot injury, missing more games in the process. United signed Martinez from Ajax during the summer of 2022 before the beginning of the last season.
He immediately established himself as a first-choice centre-back alongside Raphael Varane under Erik ten Hag’s management. The Argentine started his United career well and immediately became a fan favourite with his performances last season.
He played a pivotal role in their Carabao Cup victory that ended a six-year trophy drought at the club. Furthermore, the Red Devils enjoyed a strong season defensively and conceded only 43 goals in the Premier League.
However, Martinez has barely featured this season and his struggle with injury coincided with United’s struggle in performance and form. The Red Devils suffered a humiliating early exit from the Carabao Cup and the Champions League, conceding goals rapidly.
United are currently chasing the top-four finish in the Premier League to make it to the next year’s Champions League. They are facing limited fixtures now and having their best players back could make a massive difference.
Manchester Evening News reported that Argentina have included Martinez in their squad during the March international break. The World Cup winners would face El Salvador and Costa Rica in the friendlies before the club football resumes.
