Manchester United could welcome six players back from injury and illness against Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s Premier League clash
Manchester United could include six sidelined players in the matchday squad against Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils have welcomed the bulk of players back from injury before the Premier League clash on Saturday.
Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Amad Diallo are in contention to be in the squad. United manager Erik ten Hag offered the welcoming news as United attempts to resurrect their season in the second half.
The Red Devils suffered 14 losses from 29 matches in all competitions so far this season. An injury crisis and poor individual performances played a big part in the team’s inconsistency and inability to form cohesion. However, every club has faced an injury crisis due to the strenuous fixture period since the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ten Hag provided the injury update to the press (h/t Manchester Evening News) before the Premier League clash with Spurs. He said:
“We have had a lot of injuries, so this week in training, the last couple of days, Licha Martinez training, Casemiro training, Luke Shaw training, so there are players returning. They are coming in for selection for Sunday. Antony [will be back]. Eriksen was ill in the week, he will return. Antony will return. Amad will return. We have more choice in this moment in the squad to put out a starting XI and create a bench that is stronger. They are returning, a step ahead. When I talk about Licha Martinez returning, Casemiro returning, for instance. But they were a long time away.”
Martinez has missed most of the season due to a foot injury and Ten Hag would not rush him again. The Argentine suffered the injury last season but returned at the beginning of the current season only to reinjure himself.
Kobbie Mainoo has performed brilliantly in Casemiro’s absence, making the situation interesting as Ten Hag faces a selection headache. Casemiro faced criticism for lacking the energy to keep up with the physicality of the Premier League before his injury.

The return of many first-team players is a massive boost for the senior team for the rest of the season. The Red Devils need to push for the top-four finish despite currently being nine points away from fourth-place Arsenal. Furthermore, they are still in the FA Cup and Ten Hag would want to win a trophy with United again.
