Manchester United could help Barcelona financially by signing Jean-Clair Todibo
Manchester United could end up inadvertently helping Barcelona financially by signing OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo. The Frenchman has been heavily linked with an exit from the French club in January.
It is sometimes easy to forget that Todibo was once on Barcelona’s books. His time at the Spanish club was so uninspiring that many football fans don’t remember him playing there at all. To be fair to them, he hardly got any game time.
However, what the Spanish club did do when they sold Todibo was to negotiate a 20% future sell-on clause. This means that any club who sign the French centre-back from the Ligue 1 club would end up benefitting Barcelona. This is according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.
Considering the financial predicament that Xavi Hernandez’s team are going through at the moment, any money would seem welcome to them. They would be hoping one of the top clubs sign Todibo and for a significant fee. From their perspective, the more, the merrier.
Todibo has been one of the best centre-backs in Europe so far this season. Such have been his performances for the Ligue 1 side, Manchester United and Tottenham want to sign him as they look to bolster their defence in January.
What is a successful transfer?
Successful transfers are not always the players who are bought for a decent fee and perform exceedingly well to give you a return on investment and more. For example, not all successful transfers are like Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes.
Jean-Clair Todibo if sold currently could prove to be a very successful transfer for Barcelona. They would be making decent money out of his sale. Little would the Catalan giants have imagined his career would pan out so well in the coming years.
Todibo was the definition of ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ at Barcelona. He was at the Spanish club at a time when Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet were at the peak of their powers. Ronaldo Araujo was just breaking through.

Ultimately, it came down to whether Barcelona wanted to keep Araujo or Todibo and they chose the former. To be fair to them, the Uruguayan is now a world class defender, and they did make the right call. They could now benefit from United buying Todibo which could taste all the sweeter to them. Sadly, there is nothing we can do about it.
