Manchester United want Sporting CP’s goal-scoring machine Viktor Gyokeres to replace Anthony Martial and compete with Rasmus Hojlund
Manchester United are planning to sign Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres during the January transfer window to bolster their attack. The Red Devils’ attacking department have struggled to produce consistently, adding to their current season’s struggles.
United have lost 13 games in all competitions, showing problems in all parts of the pitch. The attacking options have failed to produce output worthy of a club of United’s stature, struggling individually and collectively.
The Red Devils have only scored 36 goals from 27 games in all competitions, failing to score in nine matches. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Antony have barely produced any output throughout this season.
Currently, midfielder Scott McTominay leads their goalscoring chart by producing six goals in all competitions. Rasmus Hojlund also produced six goals but five of those goals came in their Champions League outing.
Hojlund scored his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa in United’s 3-2 comeback win during Boxing Day. Despite his acquisition being solely for his goal-scoring expertise, the 20-year-old missed nine big chances before finally securing his first goal.
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha (h/t Express) reported that United are among the several clubs who want to sign Gyokeres. The Sweden international is enjoying a prolific season, contributing 17 goals and eight assists from 20 matches in all competitions.
Standing at 1.87 metres, Gyokeres has the physical presence and the athletic build to challenge any opponent aerially. He has the pace and movement to beat the defenders on and off the ball, possessing good dribbling and control.

The 25-year-old can act as an aerial target, providing link-up play with his teammates as he is a good passer. The aerial threat can give something different to the Red Devils if they opt to sign the Swedish forward.
Gyokeres prefers to stay central, allowing his teammates to exploit most of his movements. The Sweden international fits the profile that the United squad requires. However, Sporting, currently leading the table, might not readily agree to release their key player in the middle of the season.
