Turkey club Fenerbahce are keen on signing Manchester United forward Anthony Martial during the upcoming January transfer window. The 28-year-old is currently playing in the last season of his current contract which expires next summer.

The Frenchman signed from AS Monaco during the summer of 2015 as a record-breaking transfer deal for a teenager. However, Martial has struggled with injuries and consistency throughout his United career, struggling to solidify his place in the first-team.

This season, the 28-year-old has received more scrutiny from pundits and fans for his lack of work ethic. Martial has played as a backup to new forward Rasmus Hojlund, playing during the 20-year-old’s recovery from injury recently.

Martial had an on-field altercation with manager Erik ten Hag in the 1-0 Premier League loss against Newcastle United. The United boss wanted the Frenchman to put pressure on opposition defenders before they distributed the ball forward. The 28-year-old took Ten Hag’s gestures unkindly and responded to his manager with theatrically aggressive hand gestures.

The France international has made 317 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 90 goals and providing 55 assists so far. He has only contributed with two goals and two assists from 19 games in all competitions this season.

Sport Witness (h/t Mirror) reported that Fenerbahce board member Selahattin Baki will meet Martial to discuss a potential move. The meeting involves a conversation about the reduction of the Frenchman’s wages to make the move possible.

The Red Devils have the option to extend the Frenchman’s contract by 12 months. At the same time, Martial can strike a pre-agreement for a free transfer in the summer with any club from 2024 beginning.

United have a decision to make as they cannot afford to lose senior team players for free. The Financial Fair Play rule obligations restrict the Red Devils in the transfer market. They need to raise funds to acquire players that Ten Hag desires to bolster their top four chances. Losing Martial in January would mean that Ten Hag need a suitable replacement to be Hojlund’s competition or at least his back up.
