Manchester United playmaker Christian Eriksen expecting a swift return to first-team action after an “annoying” injury layoff

Manchester United midfielder Christiano Eriksen is eager to return to the first-team action for his team after an injury layoff. Eriksen suffered a knee injury during the 1-0 victory against Luton Town before the November international break.

The Denmark international has featured regularly in manager Erik ten Hag’s starting eleven before his unfortunate injury. Eriksen played as a deep-lying playmaker for the Red Devils, featuring over the new signings, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat.

United have suffered a nightmare start to the season, crashing out of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup already. The Red Devils are targeting a top-four finish to qualify for the next year’s Champions League competition.

United recently drew 0-0 against Liverpool at Anfield in a game where they parked the bus and struggled to counter-attack. They are currently seventh in the Premier League table, six points behind the fourth-placed Manchester City.

The Red Devils’ tactics received heavy criticism from football pundits but the United fans understood the situation at hand. United are facing an injury crisis and have struggled with poor individual performances from several players.

Speaking to TeamViewer Diaries (h/t Manchester United’s official site), Eriksen admitted his eagerness to step back into action. He said:

“Yeah, I hope so. Like you said, it was the first part in training with the team [on Monday] and it felt good, so it’s going well. I think it’s always annoying to be on the side, no matter for how long and definitely now. When it takes a little bit longer than you wished for, then obviously it’s hard, but no, I was eager to come back as soon as I could.”

Ten Hag welcomes Eriksen’s return as first-team options Mount and Casemiro remain sidelined with injuries. The United boss deployed youngster Kobbie Mainoo in the number six role during the recent games.

Mainoo has produced good performances but the youngster requires game management as over-exposure to first-team can hinder his development. On the other hand, Amrabat has been average at best with his form since making his United debut this season.

Scott McTominay has enjoyed a prolific season in front of goal but faced criticism for his overall contribution. Therefore, Eriksen remains a pivotal cog in Ten Hag’s setup with his playmaking skills and vast experience.

The Red Devils face West Ham United and Aston Villa in the Premier League next with no margin for error. Amidst the congested fixture period, they must secure victories with Eriksen set to play a crucial role.
