Former Manchester United defender was dumbfounded by Erik Ten Hag’s tactics as The Red Devils survived a dominant showing by Liverpool
Manchester United managed to survive against Liverpool as they forced a draw with both sides failing to find the back of the net.
Both sides played an exciting football match but former Red Devil Gary Neville was not impressed with his team.
He heavily criticized the Dutchman’s game plan as Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana kept trying to play out from the back. This was a sight that agitated Gary Neville each time that he had to witness it.
At one point Neville was more confused than agitated. He held the belief that trying to play it out from the back was Manchester United literally asking for Liverpool’s high press.
Let’s have a look at what the Manchester United icon had to say about the entire ordeal. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
“It might sound a little bit 1980s, 1990s but you don’t do that [play out the back] in any decade at Anfield, it’s ridiculous,”
“Look at them, there’s six Liverpool players on the edge of the box waiting for them to play it. Go on then, what are they doing.”
Despite Neville’s harsh criticism, Ten Hag stuck to his guns, even after Liverpool kept forcing the team to make mistakes. Anyway, it’s not like the Dutchman could actually hear the pundit on the field.
In the end, Ten Hag’s tactics almost paid off as Rasmus Hojlund came close to slipping one past Alisson Becker. However, both teams failed to capitalise on their opportunities and the game quickly came to a draw.
Andre Onana proved himself to be excellent for Man United. If it wasn’t for him making save after save, this game would’ve had an incredibly different outcome.

Ten Hag will be happy to come away with a draw. Although Manchester United desperately needed a win, the repercussions of losing would have been disastrous for the Dutchman.
The Red Devils will now be looking to add three points to their tally. They are set to take on West Ham United on Saturday. A win will help the players get some wind beneath their wings as they look towards a top four finish.
