Manchester United do not plan on extending the contract of Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial has been unable to meet Manchester United’s expectations this season recording just one goal and one assist in 13 games (transfermarkt). Moreover, as reported by The Athletic (subscription required) the team is all set to part ways with Martial this summer.

The Red Devils have been in dire need of a reliable forward this season. Consequently, among the top 6 teams on the Premier League table Manchester United are the only ones with a negative goal difference.

A single glance at the table is enough to tell that the Old Trafford club needs to rectify their attacking situation. Now, with Marcus Rashford’s drop in form, there has not been a single player that Ten Hag can count on as a consistent goal scorer.

Manchester United are planning on not activating Martial’s contract option. If activated, it will allow them to keep him in the team for an additional 12 months.

Much like they did with David De Gea the Red Devils stand to lose out on a ton of money with Martial as well. Not opting to activate the option in his contract means the Frenchman can walk away for nothing.

Martial was the most expensive teenager in football when Manchester signed him back in 2015. His career at Old Trafford has been riddled with injuries and long stretches of bad form. Despite showing flashes of brilliance the Frenchman never lived up to his full potential.

Expect Manchester United to aggressively shop a replacement for Anthony Martial during this summer transfer window. Now, fans can only hope that the Red Devils have learned from their past mistakes and sign someone who is reliable.

However, just getting him off the squad will be a positive. It will provide Manchester United with more salary space, which in turn can be used to acquire a new forward for the team.

The situation is being closely monitored by fans who expect to see Martial go at the start of the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Hopefully, the people at Old Trafford will make the right moves and the team will come out looking stronger post-January.
