Former Manchester United star Ashley Williams criticises Harry Maguire for his poor performances against Newcastle United
According to Metro, former Premier League player Ashley Williams criticised Manchester United star Harry Maguire for the mistakes he committed against Newcastle United. Williams also pointed out that Maguire created problems for our right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka and Andre Onana.
The 30-year-old’s fortunes have taken a turn for the better this season, bouncing back from a decline in the previous year and having the captaincy taken away during the summer. However, Maguire has managed to regain his position in Ten Hag’s plans this season, as Raphael Varane has fallen out of favour.
However, despite the recent improvement in the England player’s performance, Williams was unimpressed and criticised him for being ineffective against Newcastle and not being proactive enough in getting involved in the game.
‘How many times did he [Maguire] get in the position where he knew, I know that he knows – “I cannot get this ball off Onana and I’m leaving him”, that’s what I can’t deal with.”
According to Williams, he observed Maguire’s cunning tactics as he repeatedly instructed Onana to pass the ball to Aaron Wan-Bissaka instead of him. The fact that Maguire shrieked away from responsibility appears to have gotten on Williams’ nerves.
Maguire completed the entire 90 minutes on Tyneside, experiencing a loss following a 3-0 victory against Everton and a 3-3 draw against Galatasaray. United’s defensive abilities were also scrutinised during the latter match.
It seems that pressure on Ten Hag is mounting as his team suffered their sixth defeat of the season in the Premier League, leaving United in seventh place with 24 points. To contend for a spot in the Premier League’s top four, United must up their game considerably.
