Manchester United defender Harry Maguire accepted the apology from Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo for last year’s mockery
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire humbly accepted an apology from Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo. The Ghanaian lawmaker mocked the English defender during a parliamentary debate in his country last year.
Football fans around the world shared the video that had Adongo relentlessly mocking Maguire’s performance for the Red Devils. The Ghanaian MP used Maguire as an example to accuse Mahamadu Bawumia of his mismanagement of Ghana’s economy.
United signed Maguire for £80m from Leicester City during the summer of 2019. The deal made the Englishman, the world’s most expensive defender during that moment in time. Manchester City broke that record this summer after signing Josko Gvardiol for a record-breaking price.
Maguire struggled with inconsistency and proneness to critical errors since signing for the Red Devils. The 30-year-old received unsurmountable criticism for his failure to live up to the massive price tag. While some football fans and experts provided constructive criticism of the Englishman, others resorted to hate-filled mockery and abuses.
Current United manager Erik ten Hag took over the club in the summer of 2022 and demoted Maguire. The Dutchman preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice centre-backs last season.
Furthermore, Ten Hag stripped Maguire of captaincy during the summer and appointed Bruno Fernandes as the new captain. The Red Devils accepted a bid from West Ham United during the summer but the 30-year-old opted to stay.
Despite the continuous embarrassments, Maguire showed his resilience and tough mentality by winning back the starting role at United. The England international has been one of the best performers for the Red Devils this season.
Adongo noticed Maguire’s form and apologized to the defender for proving him wrong this season. Maguire used the social media platform X (h/t Reuters) to humbly accept the apology from Ghana’s politician.
