Manchester United are planning to appoint Paul Mitchell as the sporting director after he departed from AS Monaco.
Manchester United are favoring the appointment of former AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell to a similar role. Ligue 1 side Monaco announced the departure of the 42-year-old from the club recently after his successful tenure.
The Englishman has worked at multiple clubs over the years in various roles and roles through the ranks and reputations. The Englishman has worked at MK Dons, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Red Bull group before joining Monaco in 2020.
Mitchel joined Southampton in 2012 and worked alongside then-Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino after the club’s promotion to the Premier League. Mitchel helped the Saints sign players like Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne, Maya Yoshida during his tenure.
The 42-year-old followed Pochettino to Spurs in 2014 and helped the London club sign many key players. He signed Dele Alli, Son Heung-min, Keiren Trippier, and Toby Alderweireld under his supervision. However, Mitchel and Spurs’ owner Daniel Levy had a falling out which resulted in the English scout’s departure.
Mitchell joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as the Head of Recruitment and Development in 2018. He earned responsibility for the development of the youth squad at the club. The German club secured talented assets like Matheus Cunha, Nordi Mukiele, and Christopher Nkunku under the 42-year-old’s supervision.
Mitchell’s work at the club earned him a promotion to Chief technical director for all the Red Bull Clubs. The former professional footballer moved to Monaco subsequently as the sporting director.
Mitchell successfully recruited special talents like Vanderson, Aurelien Tchouameni, Alexander Nubel, and Axel Disasi during his reign.
Telegraph reported that the Red Devils have a range of options for sporting director roles with Mitchell as the frontrunner. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has proposed a new ownership structure after his bid to buy a 25 per cent stake at the club. The new recruitment system under the potential Ratcliffe–Glazer ownership remains up for speculation.
