Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised Harry Maguire after his man of the match display against Sheffield United.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed his delight over the man-of-the-match performance of Harry Maguire. The 30-year-old played a pivotal role in the Red Devil’s 1-2 away win against Sheffield United in the Premier League.

The England international has struggled to establish himself as the first-choice centre-back since Ten Hag took over the club. At present, the Dutchman, prefers Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice center-backs. However, long-term injuries have sidelined both the primary defenders.

Maguire earned man of the match for his dominant performance against the Blades to guide the Red Devils to victory. The Englishman will be hoping that performance will earn him more first-team opportunities going forward.

Ten Hag spoke (h/t Yorkshire Live) from Bramall Lane to praise Maguire for his man-of-the-match performance. He said:

“I have to say to Harry he is playing how we want him to play, very proactive and dominating his opponent but in possession delivering good passing. I am happy with his performance”

Maguire has appeared in five matches so far this season for the Red Devils in all competitions. Additionally, United won all three games in which he has started. The 30-year-old was an unused substitute in four games and he was not in the matchday squad for three games.

United have lost six games out of 12 they’ve played so far this season. The stats showcase the importance of Maguire despite his fall from the pecking order at the club.

During the October international break, Maguire stood up for himself, emphasizing that United achieves a higher win rate when he is part of the team. This season has proven him right, as the Red Devils have conceded 20 goals in 12 games. United have conceded two goals in three games Maguire has completed the whole game.

The Red Devils agreed an offer from West Ham United for the 30-year-old during the summer transfer window. Fortunately for them, the deal collapsed and currently United are reaping the reward. We have to wait and see what will be the role of Maguire once Ten Hag has all their defenders available.
