Manchester United legend David De Gea has congratulated his former teammate Bruno Fernandes for Portugal’s EURO 24 qualification.
Manchester United legend David De Gea congratulated his former United teammate Bruno Fernandes in his Instagram post. Fernandes’ Portugal team qualified for next year’s European Championship after beating Slovakia 3-2 in EURO 24 qualifiers.
Portugal have dominated the Group J of EURO24 qualifiers by winning seven out of seven games so far. In the seven games, they scored 27 goals and only allowed two goals, both of which Slovakia scored.
The United captain played a very crucial role in Portugal’s dominance throughout the qualification games. The 29-year-old played in all seven games and contributed four goals and seven assists with two assists coming against Slovakia.
Fernandes made a post on Instagram (h/t Manchester Evening News) to commemorate the dominance of his national team. The caption stated:
“Seven wins in seven games and the first goal achieved,” followed by a love heart emoji
Legendary goalkeeper De Gea responded to Fernandes’ post in order to congratulate the former teammate and his country. He wrote:
“Way to play!!!”
During the summer transfer window, De Gea departed from United, and Andre Onana succeeded him. The Spaniard ended his 12-year stint with the Red Devils where he etched his legacy with many memorable saves.
The Guardian reported that the 32-year-old is contemplating retirement if no top club shows interest in his services. The Spaniard attracted lots of interest from multiple leagues including the Saudi Pro League but he rejected those offers.
De Gea’s prime motivation is not monetary gains but his desire to compete at the top-most level of professional football.
Fernandes will return to the Red Devils after Portugal ends its international break by playing Bosnia and Herzegovina on 17th October.

The Red Devils have lost six out of the 11 games they have played so far in all competitions. Many United fans are sorely missing De Gea after the abysmal start to a United career for Onana.
