Former Chelsea player Glen Johnson believes Mason Mount is regretting his choice to join Manchester United.
Former Chelsea player Glen Johnson thinks that Mason Mount will be regretting his decision to join Manchester United right now.
United signed Mount from Chelsea during the summer transfer window as the first summer signing for the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag prioritized Mount to boost his midfield with creativity and energy it sorely lacked.
United have lost six out of their 11 matches across all competitions so far this season. Mount missed out on five of those matches due to an unknown injury while struggling in the games he played.
Johnson told BetFred (h/t Football. London) that Mount is surely second-guessing his decision to join the Manchester Club. He said:
“At the moment he will be[regretting]. Manchester United are a very big football club, but you don’t join them in the expectation that you’re going to be part of a team that’s 10th in the Premier League. You only want to go there to challenge for major honours. I don’t know why he decided to leave Chelsea, but I’m sure he’s questioning his decision at this very moment.”
Mount left Chelsea after 18 years at the club and progression through the Chelsea qacademy system. The Englishman won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The Athletic reported that Chelsea disappointed Mount with the new contract they offered him last season. The London club reasoned that the Englishman’s poor performance last season did not merit a lucrative deal.
The 24-year-old played 195 games for Chelsea while contributing to 33 goals and 37 assists during those matches. Ten Hag has used Mount in a much deeper role compared to a more attacking role during his Chelsea days.
The Red Devils have suffered a horrible start to the season as a whole due to injuries and inconsistencies. Mount has not stamped his authority in the midfield yet but it is too early to judge his signing.

The England international is still very young and he is just reaching the peak years of his career. However, expectations at Old Trafford are indeed the highest among any club in world football. The 24-year-old would be hoping that he can bring balance and good results for the team going forward. Mount has all the support and trust of the manager to do that.
