Manchester United are planning to trigger contract extensions of defensive duo Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Manchester United are looking to trigger the contract extensions for the two defenders, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Both defenders’ deals expire at the end of the current 2023-24 season.
Lindelof was assessing his options in March as he is behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the pecking order.
Whereas, Wan-Bissaka earned his way back as the first-choice right-back last season under manager Erik ten Hag
The Red Devils are not keen to lose two of their senior squad defenders for free. ESPN (h/t Manchester Evening News) reported that United can trigger the one-year extension clause in their contract to make sure that doesn’t happen.
However, they may leave the English giants the club needs to raise funds to sign players that suit their profile.
The England international is a defensively brilliant fullback but lacks a lot in his offensive game. Even though Wan-Bissaka has impressed Ten Hag, the Dutchman may desire an upgrade to better suit his style of play.
Sidelined with a long-term injury, Wan-Bissaka‘s future at the club is increasingly uncertain. The 25-year-old has struggled with inconsistencies and injuries throughout his time at the club.
Lindelof has appeared in 10 games for United this season, stepping into the primary defender role as injuries sidelined others. The Sweden captain has done alright but nothing too special as the Red Devils struggled this season.
United’s defensive struggles have been evident, with 19 goals conceded in just 11 matches this season across all competitions. This poor defensive performance mirrors their overall situation, marked by six losses in these 11 matches.
Consequently, they currently occupy the 10th position in the Premier League table. In the Champions League, they find themselves in fourth place in Group A, having suffered defeats in their first two games in the competition.

Ten Hag must tackle the ongoing defensive issues in the upcoming transfer windows, given the persistent challenges stemming from injuries and inconsistency within the department. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have a selection of defenders to consider.
It’s our view that United cannot risk losing both Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof without receiving any transfer fees, as they require financial resources.
