Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel thinks the team has lost their trust in goalkeeper Andre Onana
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel talked about the lack of trust building around new goalkeeper Andre Onana.
United won 2-1 against Brentford in the Premier League game after making a dramatic comeback late in the game. Mathias Jensen gave the lead to the visitors at Old Trafford in the 25th minute after errors from Casemiro and Onana.
Onana had to pick the back from the back of his net after letting Jensen’s shot slip through his hand. The 27-year-old has come under severe scrutiny from many experts and fans for unreliable performances since signing with United.
Schmeichel told Premier League productions (h/t Mirror) that Onana has put too much pressure on himself by over-analyzing his errors. He said:
“I think a lot of that [Onana’s mistakes] is pressure. You wait to think about it and analyze it (previous mistakes) after the game or at night or whatever. You have to be there for the next moment. If you’re not, you’ll make the next mistake. And now he’s upset the whole team. They will now not trust him even more, and my god, it’s not good.”
United signed Onana from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window to replace the legendary goalkeeper, David De Gea. Onana played a crucial role for Inter during their Champions League campaign last season when they reached the finale
The Cameroonian has a big shoe to fill as De Gea left the club after the 12-year stint and multiple allocates. The Spaniard also broke Schmeichel’s record for most clean sheets by a goalkeeper in United’s history on February 2023.
Onana was lucky in the debut game against Wolverhampton Wanderers when he made a clumsy challenge on a Wolves player. The 27-year-old made two more errors in the Champions League matches against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.
