Manchester United star Harry Maguire not perturbed by lack of playing time
Few players would have gone through the mental turmoil and faced criticism as much as Manchester United star Harry Maguire has faced in the past few months. The absolute hogwash he has had to undergo cannot be explained in words.
Footballers are human beings. They play the game we all love. Some of them excel at it. Some of them work very hard to try and excel in it. Highs and lows are a part of the game and they must not be overburdened with expectations.
Let’s make one thing very clear here. Harry Maguire is not a bad footballer. He has put in some absolute masterclasses for Leicester City and the English national team. He has had his moments in a Manchester United shirt too.
Just because he might not be at the levels that we expect of a central defender at the club right now, doesn’t mean that we have to troll him so much and make him a scapegoat for the problems that run right down to this club’s roots.
When Maguire scores a goal, or when Maguire makes a key contribution like that essential flick-on to Scott McTominay for the second goal against Brentford or when Maguire puts an absolute shift at the back, no one seems to talk about it. One mistake though and we are like a group of vultures waiting to pounce.
Come what may though, the man has withstood everything and has looked strong and determined to prove everyone wrong. Speaking in an interview as quoted by Manchester United’s official website, here is what our ex-captain had to say
“I’m always ready when I’m playing. I work hard in training and keep fit every day, and I’m happy that I contributed to a win”
Can Manchester United do with a better central defender than Maguire at the moment? For sure, they can. However, if the English defender can rediscover his best form, he might solve a lot of our defensive woes.
Let’s not forget we are talking about a player who has once played every single minute of an entire campaign for the same club he is being ridiculed at. It is time we start showing some respect to the English international.

Maguire will now be on national team duty where the situation is different. Come what may, he is one of the first names on the team sheet for Gareth Southgate. Let’s hope he performs well and makes a case to start when club football resumes.
