Manchester United battle European giants to acquire Atletico Madrid’s sporting director Andrea Berta.

Independent report that Manchester United are ready to battle Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid’s sporting director Andrea Berta. Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain also hold an interest in acquiring the services of the Italian.

Berta joined the Spanish giants as a technical director in the summer of 2013. He has participated in many high-profile transfer businesses for the club.

In June 2017, Atletico promoted the 51-year-old from his technical director role to the position of sporting director. The Italian businessman worked alongside manager Diego Simeone and helped the club achieve two La Liga titles.

Berta oversaw many successful signings for the Spanish giants to transform them into one of the top clubs in Europe.

Some of his notable transfers are Jose Maria Gimenez, David Villa, Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, Yannick Carrasco, and Rodri.

The Italian is also not shy to spend big when required as he did for Thomas Lemar and Joao Felix. Berta received the Best Sporting Director of the Year award in 2019 for his contributions to the club.

Daily Mail reported that United topped the spending table in the past decade globally. The Red Devils spent £1.19bn more than they recouped through the player sales.

Notable transfers included Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Romelu Lukaku and Jadon Sancho. Each of these signings has disappointed in meeting the expected levels at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils’ unimpressive tactics in the transfer market have prevented them from achieving the success they were once synonymous with. The potential appointment of Berta would not influence the role of John Murtough as United’s Director of Football but would rather add a key figure to help him.
