Erik ten Hag is confident in Rasmus Højlund, no regrets over missing out on Harry Kane
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expresses his satisfaction with the signing of Rasmus Højlund instead of experienced forward Harry Kane.
Ten Hag addressed the press conference (h/t Sky Sports) ahead of the Champions League Group A opening game against Bayern Munich, assuring everyone of his contentment with Højlund, who can make an immediate contribution to the club.
United secured Højlund’s services for £72m from Serie A side Atalanta during the summer transfer window, while Kane joined Munich.
Ten Hag assured fans (h/t Sky Sports) that there is absolutely no regret in missing out on Kane, as Højlund will deliver. He stated:
The Athletic reported that United pursued Kane throughout the summer, and Ten Hag also expressed interest in the player.
Many considered the former Tottenham Hotspur forward as someone who could transform the Red Devils into title contenders.
The 30-year-old forward, with vast experience at the topmost level, has proven himself as a goal-scorer in the Premier League, boasting impressive numbers of 278 goals and 64 assists in 430 appearances for Spurs.
However, the Red Devils chose not to make an official bid for Kane before shifting their focus to Højlund.
At 20 years of age, the club saw Højlund as a long-term project, in addition to considering him a more cost-effective option.
While Kane was a tempting candidate who could have bolstered United’s chances of winning major trophies, Højlund, being young with an abundance of quality and raw finishing abilities, faces high expectations at the club. He will need to justify his price tag sooner rather than later.
