According to Turkish outlet Takvim (h/t the Manchester Evening News), Fenerbahce expressed a strong interest in signing Manchester United star Scott McTominay on the final day of their transfer window.

The Turkish club was eager to strengthen their midfield and actively pursued the Scottish international’s services.

The Super Lig side remained highly active in the transfer market this summer. Several of their key players departed the club, but they successfully bolstered their squad by bringing in some exceptional talents.

Among their notable signings were Cengiz Under, Sebastian Szymanski, and Fred, among others. Despite securing the services of several top-notch players, the Turkish club still aimed to strengthen their midfield further before the transfer deadline on September 15.

Fenerbahce’s manager, Ismail Kartal, had a strong desire to bring in a new defensive midfielder before the transfer window closed.

They had a strong interest in adding McTominay to their squad. The 26-year-old midfielder, who emerged from the club’s youth ranks and was promoted to the first team in the summer of 2017, has amassed 212 appearances and contributed to 22 goals since his debut.

The Scottish star has played a significant role for the Red Devils since his introduction to the senior team.

However, in recent seasons, the dynamics have shifted. The English giants have brought in several new midfielders, causing the experienced player to drop in the pecking order.

McTominay was not a regular player in Ten Hag’s plans. Although United aimed to sell him while their transfer window was still open, they were unsuccessful in doing so.

While the market had closed in Europe’s major leagues, there were still a few countries with active windows. Turkish giants Fenerbahce wanted to try their luck before their transfer window closed on September 15th.

They wanted him on a season-long loan deal. Unfortunately, they couldn’t reach an agreement in time, and as a result, the player remains a part of the Red Devils’ first-team setup.

While McTominay has made appearances in two matches this season, his total playing time amounts to just seven minutes.

It’s unlikely that his situation will improve under Ten Hag, and there are possibilities that he could seek a transfer away from the club during the January transfer window amid interest from Bayern Munich.

His performance against Brighton and Hove Albion was also not up to par, even if he continues to shine for his national team. It remains to be seen whether Sofyan Amrabat’s return from injury impacts his status at the club.

Even if he leaves, United would be in a favourable position to extract significant profit through his sale. It’s a win-win situation for both sides.
